European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe such as the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions targeted figures that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in criticizing the decision.

The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and European institutions.

Other Developments in the News

In related judicial developments:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to reduce federal homeland security funding to states that do not comply with certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge ruled the action was “another example” of linking federal aid to policy compliance.
  • Approval was given for the dispatch of 350 national guard members to a major US city ahead of the holiday period, alongside an ongoing immigration enforcement operation.
  • The nation of Palau will consent to take in a limited number of individuals from the US in exchange for additional aid, after concluding a formal agreement with Washington.

Furthermore, a Democratic lawmaker has filed a lawsuit seeking the removal of the current president’s name from a well-known cultural institution in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that comments regarding foreign petroleum resources align with a wider ideology in certain circles of “resource imperialism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
