Individuals Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Regain Weight at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle regimens.

Published data in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using such drugs should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original mass in about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the outcomes of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Fast Regain

Nutrition scientists suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating far more likely."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals say that, given the likelihood of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.

This view is echoed by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the long-term character of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

People who have stopped the medication report a intense return of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and I was suddenly starving," described an individual.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, clinicians caution that while the jabs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing lifestyle support.
