Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in Iconic Rivalry

Test match action

The Australian skipper has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 Test matches with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the upcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might sit out due to a ongoing back issue that remained unresolved.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"It's clear that time is getting short and multiple considerations involved, not only the back issue, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. [We are] really confident that he will feature a key capacity. Hopefully starting in Perth. Otherwise, then we'll pick it up."

Previous Setbacks

The captain missed Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lower back issue.

Previous incidents include of recurring issues, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if the captain had resumed bowling as part of his recovery but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was withdrawn recently from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a precautionary measure because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "small issue and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to deliver overs."

"We put so much time has gone into developing the strategy for him to participate for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," the selector detailed.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches regardless. His aggressive style the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, should it hinder progress for a short period, we just made the decision to adopt a safer strategy."
