The Gaming Giant Recruits Apex Legends Lead to Rescue Struggling Action Game Ambitious Title

The renowned publisher has welcomed a seasoned producer from the creators of Apex Legends to lead the development team at their internal studio, which is currently working on the anticipated over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as Project Ethos.

Management Shift Follows Poor Response

Brinkman steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' underwhelming early showing last autumn.

Recently, 2K president David Ismailer informed employees about this decision through an official communication, which highlighted that early feedback sessions had indicated the necessity for a more defined game identity.

Ismailer expressed that the developers is now refining Project Ethos with a revised focus, aiming to address player expectations.

A Pattern of Key Hires

The news echoes a comparable action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise development group.

Here is the full message from Ismailer's memo:

Dear Team—

I know you all just finished your gathering - I hope you’re as enthusiastic as I am with the good news. Previously I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I am confident in this group. You all are some of the most motivated and creative creators we have had the chance to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to endure.”

With your dedication and flexibility, especially over the last year, you repeatedly show that.

The player input from last fall’s the game demo was enlightening. It affirmed the potential of a action-packed game but indicated we still had work to do. It highlighted the need for a clearer brand.

It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You took the input to heart and reimagined Project ETHOS with a renewed goal - one that’s poised to deliver on its ambition to our fans.

Our confidence in this project increases every day. To advance the incredible development you’ve made, I’m excited to announce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Lead of the team. Following several months of discussions, Ben comes aboard us on the specified date.

Ben’s management and background in the PVP shooter space is vast, having devoted the recent years producing and managing some of the most recognizable series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, Apex Legends.

Please join me in receiving Ben soon. We are all looking forward to persist seeing the development of the game in the months to come.

David
