As any significant awards ceremony draws close, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to recognize unsung work and delight the passions of followers with niche passions.
Another commentator has already made advocating for terror-themed awards. It would be amazing. So would board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing above others. This is the request: There should be an award type for logic-based games.
Categorizing Game Types
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason movie academies steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse they barely qualify one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Current Gaming Award Categories
The major gaming awards presently include genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories actually cover many game types, and you can find room accommodating various experiences.
This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to accommodate them. Think about these outstanding current releases, all very different: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category in 2014
- Another creative title missed out in 2019
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
- Only a few puzzle games scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often modest productions, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most engaged experiences globally maintaining this status for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, while interacting with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.
Restating the point, these are games lacking appropriate categories in important events. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of most fundamental forms of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
