Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, new Dungeon Master Brennan Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with deep backstory, a diverse cast of personalities, and a thrilling plot including celestial beings, fiends, and dark forces increasing in power within the urban setting.
Heads-up: Spoilers for Episode 3 of the new season follow below.
The Soldiers Table Introduced
Episode 3 ended with a huge suspense moment and presented the initial group of characters who will split off from the primary party to embark on their separate journey, apart from the additional parties.
The Soldiers table features the determined fighter (played by Travis Willingham), the nimble rogue (Laura Bailey), Tyranny (Whitney), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (Robbie Daymond).
The Reason for Division
Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the start that keeping everyone at one table would be impossible.
This explains, the first four episodes of Campaign 4 serve as an Prelude, connecting the individual narratives before dividing into three distinct groups: Fighters, Strategists, and Questers.
Characteristics of the Combat Party
As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged combat and conflict-driven narrative style where non-violent answers are scarce.
Initially, figures such as the reluctant priest the cleric might look mismatched, but the developments of the latest installment demonstrate why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the Soldiers table.
Motivations for Departure
For one thing, the party understands precisely where to go next after a brutal opening clash with the antagonists.
Casimir of the deceased character—whose death initiated the story’s plot—exploited the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering the secret base, attacking the rogue, and stealing all the magical artifacts to auction.
The antagonist then settled his debts and fled to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, north of the city, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.
Character Drivers
Secondly, each member has a specific drive to depart the urban setting:
- The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and trusted friend, seeks vengeance.
- Kattigan has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a dangerous place.
- The warrior and The cleric, having disobeyed his relatives’ demands to eliminate Teor and instead freed him, have no other options.
- Yet, their position as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the team enter areas they normally couldn’t.
- Moreover, The grateful character pledged a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now accompany him anywhere.
Pursued by Authorities
Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that rule the setting for a multiple motives, making remaining behind no longer safe:
- The rogue and The hero are known criminals.
- The strong figure and The healer betrayed the powerful family and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
- Teor is marked for death by the clan.
This leaves them no alternative but to head to the remote area in quest for the traitor.
